Kathleen Harkins, Community Health Educator II, and Cindy Jackson, Community Health Initiatives Coordinator, held a training with Valley View School District (VVSD) Guidance Counselors and Social Workers on December 14, 2018 at Lukancic Middle School in Romeoville.
The purpose of the training was to educate staff on how to facilitate referrals to adolescent health services in the community, including services at the Will County Health Department and the Will County Community Health Center, and to teach VVSD staff about Illinois laws on minor consent and confidentiality.
The training was tied to both the Will County Health Department’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention and Adolescent Health Grants with the goal of improving the health of adolescents in Will County and reducing teen birth and STI rates.
Resource folders were distributed to all Guidance Counselors and Social Workers. These folders contained referral information to adolescent health services throughout Will County, handouts on minor consent and confidentiality laws, and specific data to Bolingbrook and Romeoville on teen birth rates and STI rates.
