WELLS AND SEPTIC SYSTEMS

The Will County Health Department Environmental Health Division provides inspections of water wells, waste water treatment systems and non-community public water supplies.

Will County Environmental Health Safe Drinking Water Program

The EH Safe Drinking Water Program assures safe, proper construction of water wells. New construction is inspected and test to ensure bacteria-free, low-nitrate water at private homes. Non-Community Public Water Supplies, such as churches, schools and even food facilities that are on a private well are sampled yearly and surveyed biannually, per IPDH regulations. For more information on NCPWS visit the IPDH website.

Environmental Health Private Sewage Program

The Private Sewage Program assures proper installation of wastewater treatment systems that are in line with all codes and issued permits. For FY2018, EH conducted 2,010 water program activities, 1,166 sewage program activities, and handled 138 septic permits. There are a variety of different types of systems that can be installed and are constantly changing with new technology. For more information or to search for a contractor please visit the IPDH website.

EPA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)

To comply with the EPA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), the WCHD EH lab also collects routine samples from discharging septic systems, or induvial mechanical systems. More information a can be found at the EPA website.
