Wells and Septic Systems

The EH Safe Drinking Water Program assures safe, proper construction of water wells. New construction is inspected and test to ensure bacteria-free, low-nitrate water at private homes. Non-Community Public Water Supplies, such as churches, schools and even food facilities that are on a private well are sampled yearly and surveyed biannually, per IPDH regulations. The Private Sewage Program assures proper installation of wastewater treatment systems that are in line with all codes and issued permits. For FY2017, EH conducted 1,893 water program activities, 1,277 sewage program activities, and handled 170 septic permits. There are a variety of different types of systems that can be installed and are constantly changing with new technology. To comply with the EPA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), the WCHD EH lab also collects routine samples from discharging septic systems, or induvial mechanical systems. More information a can be found at https://www.epa.gov/npdes
